Yesterday at lunch I headed over to The Smoke Ring in Sugar Land for a well-deserved cigar. While perusing through the humidor, I saw the recently raved Casa Magna on their shelves and had to see what the rave was about. Let me just tell you, that these are thick cigars. A Nicaraguan puro that was the brainchild of Manuel Quesada and Nestor Placencia, this cigar was touted as Cigar Aficionado’s #1 Cigar of 2008. I won’t go into detail about how much I don’t care about that, so…

Anyway, this cigar carries a majestic band to go along with its majestic girth. The colorado wrapper was decently oily. The feel of the cigar was a little spongy and quite inconsistent, and its very ragged burn proved a bad roll. This wasn’t your typical improperly stored cigar burn, this was definitely a poor roll burn. It required touch-ups and would never correct fully. However, that being said, this had some great flavors. It started with a full, peppery spice and cedar that half way through settled into some hard leather and earth. Toward the end, there was quite a bit of tar build-up that didn’t sit well with the palate. That’s the danger of such a full-bodied smoke. Anyway, I put it down with about two inches left. It has a long finish.

At just under $5, I can see that this will be a cigar to stick around and I know many people like them. While I don’t think they’re bad (I think they’re pretty decent actually), I’m wondering how much CA sold the title of #1 Cigar for.

What are your thoughts on this cigar?

Okay, thanks to Tex Cigars, I’m able to review this bundle robusto for those of my readers who are looking for reviews of cheaper cigars. Now, I’ve smoked plenty of bundles in my day, but had gotten away from them over the years. Bundles are great though, especially if you’re an everyday smoker or a multiple-cigars-a-day smoker. They’re easier on the pocket book than full premium cigars and, depending on the bundle, can taste just as good. Often, bundles are just premium cigars that didn’t pass quality checks of the factories, but are still good enough to be sold.

With a sun-grown wrapper and full of Dominican tobacco, this 5×50 Solamente wasn’t pretty. There was some excess tobacco sticking out of the foot. The wrapper was messy and the cap wasn’t all that great. But what will surprise you when you light up is the flavor. I was bowled over…really! Sweet wood all the way through. Mild to medium-bodied, this cigar tasted great. The burn: blah. The presentation: blah. The taste: great. And the bundle sells for less than $25. If you’re on the golf course, or workin’ in the garage, then this cigar will satisfy you. I’m surprised, really, cause I have my moments of cigar snobbiness.

You can try them for yourself by clicking the link below and buying some. If you don’t like them, they’re cheap enough to give to your friends when they come mooching.

If you’ve never checked them out, I urge you to do so, because they have some high end cigars that a lot of other retailers can’t keep on hand.

Okay, so I’ve smoked these before and was never impressed so when Billy sent me these I was a little less than enthusiastic, but a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do, right? For this review I smoked two samples and here’s what I got: The wrapper has a coffee smell that is quite pleasant. Looking at the cigar it looks well rolled. The draw was a little loose on both sticks, which isn’t a problem for me. It all started to go downhill from there. The taste was bitter and tannic from beginning to end on both of these. About a quarter of the way through the wrappers started to unravel on me. I’ve had this happen before on these and I’m not sure if it’s just a delicate wrapper or what. I double checked my humidor to make sure that the storage conditions were good, and they were, so I don’t know what the story is. Long story short, these cigars are not my thing. I do know, however, that they’re quite popular, so if it’s your thing, check out Cigars Direct to pick some up.

I know its been a while since I put up a review, and Ricky and I both have been short on time lately. That being said, I thought it was time for a review, so here comes a quick time on one of my go to premium cigars, the Padilla 1932 Signature Robusto. I had one of these at my local b&m yesterday, and it had been a while since I had one, and I thought it was time to review one for our loyal readers.

On pre-light, it was firm with a little bounceback. I clipped it with my Palio cutter, and it cut effortlessly. The pre-light draw was effortless, with some oak flavors with the typical spice found in a lot of Padilla cigars. As I lit it up, the first thing I noticed was how easy it was to draw on this cigar. As I started to get into this cigar I got lots of smooth, oak flavors, with some spice, and earth undertones. The cigar stayed this way throughout the entire smoke, but they were all flavors I really enjoyed. The ash on this cigar was just about perfect and firm. The smoke was billowing, and the burn was just about perfect all the way through the cigar. My recommendation is that if you see these at your local shop, pick up some to keep in your humidor. While they are not overly complex to me, they are a very good smoke, and well worth the money.

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a Quick Time review… Okay, it’s been awhile since I’ve done any review. School’s got me quite busy, but I decided today to squeeze a smoke in while I study for my Geology test. It just so happens that Cigars Direct had sent me the perfect smoke for this: the Special G.

At 3 3/4 inches, this is a short cigar, but don’t let that fool you as you can easily get over 45 minutes of enjoyable smoke out of this cigar. As I smoked it, it came on strong with wood and light spice that settled nicely into a medium bodied smoke. The wood remained throughout with the spice coming and going, as spice often seems to in cigars. The burn was flawless on both of my recent samples, and the ash was tight. And who doesn’t like a tight ash? And at less than $3 for this smoke, you can’t beat it. This cigar is easily as good, if not better than the AF Short Story or the LFD El Jocko.

Despite the name, this cigar is not a Cuban cigar, but it is in fact the most complex cigar I have ever tasted to date. When I bought this one from my local shop yesterday, I originally was not going to do a review of it, but after smoking it, I decided I couldn’t keep this one from our loyal readers! Here is a quick time review for you guys!

As I took this cigar along the length of my nose, I got a lot of spice, and some sweetness that reminded me of nutmeg. I was excited to light this one up. Some of the flavors I got out of this cigar were incredible. As I started out with it, I got a heavy shot of cocoa, along with some nutmeg and raisin flavor all at once. It was really tasty. That combination was just incredible. The burn wasn’t perfect, but I was enjoying the flavors so much, I wasn’t really paying attention to the burn The smoke was abundant, and as I blew it out my nasal passages, it was the smoothest smoke I have ever exhaled through the nostrils. No burn, just smooth, and flavorful. These flavors continued through the length of the cigar, but the difference was, as I burned through the cigar, certain flavors would make themselves more known that the others. At the first third of the cigar, the nutmeg was prominent, as I moved onto the middle, it was the cocoa, then toward the end it was the raisin flavor. Now don’t get me wrong, while those were the prominent flavors at certain spots in the cigar, you could still always taste the others, they were just a bit more in the background. I paid $10 for this stick (CA prices) at my local shop, and it was well worth every penny. I highly recommend everyone try this cigar at least once!

So I was sitting at my local cigar shop, and they just happened to get some of these Chiselitos in stock. I really enjoy a strong cigar, and this one is supposed to be no exception, so I pick one up. I took it the length of my nose and it was smelling semi sweet with some spice. I cut it with my palio, and lit up. I gotta say the flavors I got out of this were great! Lots of spice, with some sweetness, and great amounts of smoke. The flavors were pretty consistant through out, and I did notice that

this was one STRONG smoke. I made the mistake of smoking it on an empty stomach, and even as an experienced cigar smoker, this one threw me for a loop. All in all, I really enjoyed this smoke, and I can’t wait to have another! I highly suggest picking one up.

Looking for a smoke to unwind with last night, I perused my desktop humidor to see what I had in there that I hadn’t smoked in awhile. My fingers brushed this Leon Jimenez and I vaguely remembered smoking a few before and that they were decent cigars. Now, it had been quite a few months, so I figured it was time to try another. And I’m glad I did.

The cedar scent of the Connecticut broadleaf wrapper was reminiscent, and smelled like all Connecticut wrapper does to me. Upon lighting with some wooden matches, the first thing that struck me was the color of the ash. It was completely white! It never turned gray. The burn remained perfectly crisp the whole time and the draw was perfect. A mild spiciness was layered beneath a woody flavor that was light and sweet. And this cigar was mild.

All in all, I enjoyed this and could see myself smoking this on a cool summer morning with some coffee. The construction and burn was quite impressive, and, I must say, was not expected from this line. Like I said, this cigar was mild, which usually isn’t what I reach for, but this provided plenty of flavor and satisfaction.

It was 6:30 AM, and the sun was just coming up. I poured myself a cup of Jose’s Vanilla coffee, and went to the humidor and one of my Oliva Serie G Cameroon Tubos was just calling my name. I’ve had quite a few Oliva’s and they have all been great, with incredible construction, and this one proved to be no different. The ash held almost the entire length of the cigar, and the woody, leathery flavors with a slight hint of spice was perfect with my coffee. This was one smoke that I did not want to put down. As I sat on my deck, watching the sunrise with coffee and this cigar in hand, I pondered life, and enjoyed the flavors. My opinion on this, as well as the ENTIRE Oliva line is this: BUY SOME. Do it now, and smoke them. You will not regret it!

Nothing like a cigar on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Today I decided to pick out something that I normally don’t smoke. I’m not on the Rocky Patel bandwagon, so it’s rare for me to reach for one, but today I figured why the hell not. I pulled out the RP Sungrown Toro and inspected it. It was a good looking cigar. Feeling it I could tell that it was well made and the smooth burn throughout the smoke confirmed this for me. It also produced a great amount of smoke. Starting out with some extreme spice, it settled into a medium body strength full of wood and leather. The sungrown Ecuadorian Sumatra gives it good consistent flavoring over the Nicaraguan binder and filler. This is a straight forward cigar; not complex in the least. I’d have to say that I don’t think these live up to they hype that many others do, but it’s a good consistent, yet average, cigar.
