Florida Cigar Taxes – Call to Action!

Being a member of CRA, I get updates on what’s going on in the legal realms of the cigar industry, and this is the latest.  Florida’s state senate is in the middle of adding additional taxes onto cigars.  Read the release below and, Floridians, call your local representatives.  Get this stopped!

Florida State Senate Attacks Cigars With New Taxes

A new shell bill (SB 2438) introduced by Florida Senator Thad Altman was unanimously approved by the State’s Senate Finance & Tax Committee; which Sen. Altman chairs.

SB 2438 is an act relating to taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products (cigars) and would increase taxes on cigars at a rate of $1.00 per ounce!

With the nation in one of its deepest recessions in history and the fact that as of April 1st, the Federal Cigar Tax was increased by 700% to $.40 per cigar to pay for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), now is not the time to burden Florida’s struggling cigar consumers, mom and pop cigar retailers and family-owned manufacturers with such an onerous tax.

Florida is the epicenter of cigar manufactures, importers, and consumers. If passed, this bill could have devastating affects on the entire cigar industry.
