House Republicans Won’t Support SCHIP
Well, it looks like at least the Republicans have our backs concerning the new SCHIP bill. While for different reasons than we cigar smokers have, Texas House Representative Joe Barton practically guaranteed that the House Republicans would support the veto should the initial Senate and House vote pass and make it to the President, where George W. has already vowed to veto the bill.
GW is extremely concerned with nationalized healthcare and will not support it at all. How does this affect us cigar smokers? Well, while the proposed tax has decreased from the initial $10 proposal to now a maximum tax of $3 per stick, it would still be a hell of a lot of money coming out of our pockets to support this program. In essence, it’s a sin tax on smokers to fund what’s becoming a large national concern.

WASHINGTON – Texas Rep. Joe Barton guaranteed that House Republicans would sustain a veto of Democrat-sponsored legislation to expand federal funding for children’s health insurance Wednesday and urged other lawmakers to temporarily continue the popular program due to expire at the end of this month.
