SCHIP II – Update
Well, we’re at it again. The Senate passed the revised SCHIP bill with a measure of 64-30. Now we wait for the President to do what he promised to do again: VETO. This is seriously becoming a concern for the American people for a few reasons. First, there are children who depend on this funding for their serious healthcare concerns. Second, this issue has become a political stage where the only people who are going to be hurt are the American populace; well, some of us.
Here’s the deal. Should the bill pass in its current form (and it’s better than originally proposed but not good enough) then we, the cigar smokers and other tobacco users, become the victims of social ignorance. All the news stories talk about is the 61 cent increase on cigarettes, but they don’t talk about the rise in taxes for cigars. Hey, let’s not let the people know about that because what we really want is for people to only know that cigarette smokers (you know those really evil people) will be paying for your child’s medical care…I mean they caused all the problem anyway, didn’t they?
If the Democrats don’t stop trying to push their political agenda and find a way to fairly and equally compromise on this matter, then a lot of families will be at risk. I’m not against government subsidized programs as long as they’re properly controlled and are rehabilitative and not just another form of welfare. As it currently stands, this is a program written and designed with many ways to have it taken advantage of. Not good!
What I urge all of you to do is to keep contacting your Senators and Congressmen and let them know that they need to find a different way to pay for this bill and that they need to find a way to compromise to make the bill work within a capitalistic free market system.
