Wisconsin Governor Signs Smoking Ban Law

Well, I hate for my first post this week to be sad news such as this, but here it is, cheese lovers, your governor has signed a smoking ban into law that will take effect July 2010.  I guess you have a little over a year to smoke it up when and where you can, because after that, you’re social outcasts.  Here’s the story:

MADISON, Wis. — After years of debate at the state Capitol, Gov. Jim Doyle signed a statewide smoking ban into law on Monday.

“Today, at long last, I will sign legislation enacting a statewide smoking ban,” Doyle said.

He signed the measure three times — in ceremonies in Madison, Milwaukee and Green Bay. He first signed the bill in Milwaukee

The new ban will be similar to the citywide measure already in place in Madison with no smoking allowed in almost all workplaces, including restaurants and bars.

The statewide ban does allow exceptions for tribal casinos and tobacco and cigar shops. The measure also says local governments can’t pass any stricter regulations.

Doyle and anti-smoking advocates worked for years on getting the measure passed. At Monday’s events, the governor thanked advocates for their work pushing for the ban. He said the law will save the state money in health care costs, improve public health and save lives.

“As we have worked to get this ban in place with many of you, I’ve visited many bars, restaurants and communities from La Crosse to Appleton to show a simple fact: To show that smoke-free businesses can thrive,” Doyle said.

The ban will go into effect in July 2010.

Twenty-five other states have similar laws.
