A Truly Great Cigar

This weekend was a great reminder of what a truly great cigar is.  You see, I’m a busy man.  I work full-time, have a side business, attend two colleges, and am a divorced dad of two beautiful girls.  When I do get a smoke in, it’s usually because I’m on my lunch hour, or I’ve snuck out to have a cigar.  Plus, I’m usually doing reviews and am occupied while smoking.  Don’t get me wrong, I love a good smoke whether I’m squeezing it in or if I’m smoking by myself too.

This weekend, however, I had the chance to smoke a couple cigars with a great friend that I haven’t seen in months; probably more than six months.  After a few reschedules, I was able to make it to his house this past Saturday where the promise of cigars, wine, and a few games of cribbage awaited me.  I brought some EO Cubao Lanceros with me and he always has something in his humidor that I haven’t tried.  Well, as we smoked, drank, and I got spanked badly at cribbage, we laughed and reminisced.  We talked shit, mocked each other, and truly bonded.  And while I barely paid any attention to the construction or distinct flavor profiles of the cigars I was smoking (I honestly can’t remember the name of the one he gave me), I can remember that they tasted awesome and were the best cigars I’d had in awhile.  Not because they were great cigars, but because I was enjoying them in great company.

Sometimes as a cigar blogger it’s easy to get stuck in that “I have to analyze everything” mode of cigar smoking.  It was a joy to be reminded that cigars really are best when they are a gateway to friends and family and the moments shared.  So whether it’s a $2 cigar or a $20 cigar, when you’re enjoying it with the people who make you laugh, there’s no better cigar out there.

I hope that you are all able to have that experience as well.  Let’s hear your thoughts on it!!

  1. Very wise words!! Love this post, and I think we all need to sit back a bit more and just enjoy.

  2. A tremendous smoke. One of my favorite lanceros ever. And the best vitola in the Cubao line.

  3. Very great words Ricky… I agree completely. I spend MOST of my cigar smoking times at this point analyzing, taking pictures nad reviewing smokes. That being said, I take time at least a couple times a month to just hang with buddies at my local shop to smoke and drink and play some Texas Hold Em. Great stuff!
