Cigar Peeves?!

Let’s do a little discussion topic today.  I’m curious to know what pet peeves you have that concern cigars.  For me, one of my biggest is when a cigar band is not well placed on the cigar and the glue ends up damaging the cigar.  It just sucks when you have a cigar that is smoking and tasting great, and you want to nub it, but can’t because the band won’t come off, or when you do get it off it takes the wrapper with it.   A plugged cigar is another.  Also, I don’t like cigar elitists.  I could go on and on and on, but those are just a few.

So, what are yours?  Let’s hear them.  It doesn’t necessarily have to just be about the cigars themselves, but anything smoking related.  I also hate cigarette smokers that flick their butts on the ground or out their car window.  Talk to me, people.

  1. Cigar manufacturers not keeping their sites up to date with information on their new cigars.

B&Ms who push the high dollared junk to newbies instead of good, reasonably priced cigars.

I’ll second the Cigar Elitists. They are worse than the wine snubs. Nothing worse than seeing some country club dork, talkin about “Cooohiiibaas” lol

Another pet peeve of mine is, when I read a companys review of its cigar, and it doesnt taste anyway like they say it does. I know thats how the selling works and all, but when I read “hints of vanilla” , I wanna taste the vanilla.lol

And lastly. I wish good decent bundles got more respect. I smoke these sticks called “Original Cuabans” that I found at CI..and damn if they arent one of the best smokes I’ve had in a long time.

  3. Online price gouging. Because of where I live, I have to buy 99% of my cigars online. It is a shame how much of a markup is done on some hard to find and small batch cigars. I’ve bought Opus X at B&Ms when I travel for work, but I haven’t found an online site yet that comes close to what a respectable B&M charges.

  4. All in all, my cigar life is pretty drama free. Sure, there are a few small things that bug me, but I try not to let any of them impact the positve aspects.

That said, my ‘pet peeves’ are generally targeted at the drama:

    1. Drama in internet cigar forums. If you aren’t having fun/learning on a board…stop reading and posting.

    2. Cigar posers…don’t pretend to be interested in cigars (because you know I am) and then leave 3/4 of the $12 cigar I just gave you in the ashtray.

    3. Old school retailers that complain about competition from other retailers, online and catalogs. FYI. It’s not them. It’s you. You are stuck in the 80s and 90s, you’ve lost your passion and your pricing strategy and business model are not in line with what your customer is looking for.

  5. @ Ron – Taste is subjective, however, if anyone claims some outrageous kinds of flavors in their cigar, it’s probably BS.

@ Jason – Unfortunately there’s so much politics behind who gets the high priced rare cigars like Opus X that it’s not funny. Gouging is never cool.

@ Skip – It’s funny (not so much) how much drama an internet forum can generate. For a place made up of a lot of grown-ass men, it sure can sound a lot like a high school girls’ locker room.

  6. Coincidentally, about two hours ago I was out smoking an Oliveros Classic Collection Mulato (barber pole style cigar) and when I tried to remove both of the bands they took a section of the wrapper off with it. Now this wasn’t something I attempted carelessly either…I was very cautious when I did this and it still pulled pieces of the wrapper off with it. My buddy, who was smoking the same stick, did not have the same experience so maybe it was just the particular stick I had.

    On to the unrelated peeves…

    1. I dislike small unknown “boutique” brands that charge the same per cigar as an established premium line cigar. Then when you give it a shot it ends up being a tasteless flaming tree branch.

    2. I dislike walking into my local B&M and finding the price per cigar being several dollars higher than any other local shop I’ve frequented. I understand one can find sticks online for cheaper rates, but among B&Ms within a 10 mile radius the price point shouldn’t vary as severely as I sometimes see. (I factor in location and overhead to give the benefit)

    3. I dislike people lumping cigar smokers into the same category as cigarette smokers.

Having nowhere to smoke within the Santa Monica area (smoke lounge, etc..)

  8. @ beezer – Yeah, but I hate spending any kind of money to find it a tasteless flaming tree branch, even if it’s just a $2 stick.

@ vasypher – Just one of the many downsides to living in California. ;)

  9. Advertising BS: “Cremosa Cubana is a sales dynamo!” Or the old story about finding a bale of pre-embargo tobacco in a factory cellar — in perfect condition 50 years later! Incredible!

On the other hand, if those are my major peeves I must have it pretty good. ;)
