Happy 4th of July – Celebrate Your Freedom

Happy 4th of July, y’all. Forgive me as I step up on my soapbox a little. You see, July 4th, Independence Day, is a special day that many of us don’t see the full truth of. Yes, it represents our independence from England and our birth as a new nation. But, to me, it represents a little more. It represents our responsibility and our duty as a nation now too. Wait? What? Let me explain… As America continues to grow, it continues to change, and the responsibility of how it changes is in our hands. Not in our politicians’ hands. 232 years ago, when the forefathers were putting their mark on the Declaration of Independence together, they were doing it for the whole of our nation to escape what they perceived as the tyrannical rule of England. We, as Americans now, don’t need to worry about English tyranny, but instead we need to be mindful of how our leaders are governing us, and if we feel we’re not going in the right direction, then it is our duty to get them back on track. And if they won’t get back on track, then it is our responsibility to remove them and put someone else in their place.

I know, this is all a little deep for today, which should be about family, food, fun, and fireworks, but just keep this in the back of your mind as our government continues to take away our small freedoms, like smoking; begins to overtax us with measures like SCHIP (it’s not completely done yet), and feeds on the apathy of Americans who just can’t be bothered with anything but what’s going on in their immediate circle. Think about this, and then think about what America would be like if our forefathers wouldn’t have had the courage to get involved and take things into their own hands.

So, go get one of your best cigars, light it up, hug your family members and let them know how much you love and appreciate them, raise a toast to the great men who structured our nation, and then think about how you can help keep it great too.
