Cuba is looking to break into a new market segment: women smokers. It’s true that many cigar manufacturers either choose to ignore the female demographic or they barely recognize it. CAO brings a little something in their flavored line and there are a few other makers that bring something small and/or flavored, but they usually fall well short of their other offerings. Cuba’s going to try and see if they can entice women smokers by making the Julieta. Yes, it’s smaller, but it will bring Cuban tobacco to the female enthusiast in a way they’ve not done it before.

Havana, Cuba (CNN) — Faced with a two-year slump in sales, Cuban cigar makers have unveiled a new weapon in the hunt for consumers: Julieta, a slim smoke made just for her.

The global recession, combined with anti-smoking laws, have put the squeeze on Cuba’s hand-rolled stogies, one of the quintessential symbols of privilege.

International sales fell 8 percent in 2009 to $360 million following a 3 percent drop in 2008, according to Habanos S.A., a joint venture between Cuba and Britain’s Imperial Tobacco Group.
