Cigar Review: Arturo Fuente Short Story

I was turned onto these little buggers awhile ago by a former boss who said that he had a hard time finding them but whenever he did he had to buy as many as he could afford. So, I figured I’d have to see what the deal was with these little sticks. I’ve had many since then and my opinion wavers back and forth about these cigars. Thanks to my friends at Cigars Direct, I’m able to bring this review to you.

Appearance: If there’s one thing AF knows how to do, it’s roll good-looking cigars. This one is no different. It’s perfecto shape with nipple-tip is always immaculate. A slightly veiny wrapper tightly binds the innards with no easily visible seam. So what if they can never seem to get the band on perfectly; I wouldn’t be able to either.

Taste: If you’re looking for complexity, looks elsewhere. If you like a good cigar with the standard woody, leathery taste, then this cigar is for you. I find it a mild cigar that’s almost sweet. It’s pleasant. There’s not much more to say when it comes to this cigar’s flavor.

Aroma: This cigar stays true to AF standards with its good ol’ tobacco smell. I’m sure if you try hard enough you’ll smell some other hints of something, but with this cigar I’ll sum it up as that “good ol’ tobacco smell.” The smoke was light and even a bit sweet in the nostrils and doesn’t overpower you as it wisps into the air.

Construction: This is a solid cigar. No, I don’t mean solid like a rock, I mean this sucker burns very well, which is hard to do with a cigar in this shape. I find that if I ever have uneven burn problems with this cigar it’s usually my own fault from a poor lighting job. Luckily with this example, I got a great start and it held a very even burn throughout. This cigar was firm to the touch and my light squeezes showed no inconsistencies.

Overall: I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest AF supporter. I think they make great quality cigars, but often their flavor profile doesn’t sit well with me. To each his own, right? This cigar is one that I do like. I don’t love it as far as taste goes, but I’ve never been disappointed with its quality and consistency. And there aren’t that many short smokes on the market. Slowing down I can get this one to last about 45 minutes, but my standard is about 30 minutes. That suits me just fine on a busy day when I can’t enjoy my more favored larger sizes.

Cigar Rating: 3 of 5 stars

  1. BrewMeister says:

These little smokes continue to be one of my favorite 30-35 minute smokes. My other favorite quick smoke, which is a bit harder to find, the R.D. Gomez, “FAST BREAKS” are just as enjoyable, and a bit less expensive.

  2. I just tried one of these little guys out last night and I found it to be a satisfying smoke. It’s the perfect size to smoke while you wait for the charcoal in the bbq to get to where you can throw a couple of steaks on. Tonight I’ll give the Fuente Hemingway Classic a try with a glass of Deschute’s Mirror Mirror 2009 Reserve Barley Wine.
