Cigar Review: Casa Torano Maduro Robusto

Okay, well it’s been quite awhile since I’ve done a review myself. Thanks to my guest reviewers for helping fill in. So, for my first review back, I picked a cigar that I’d tried before and wanted to try again and review for my readers. The recently released and long awaited Casa Torano Maduro.

Now, I’m not much of a mild cigar smoker, but when I want something light for maybe an early morning smoke, you can bet that the original Casa Torano is what I’m reaching for more often than not. Now, add the fact that I’m a big time maduro lover and this cigar should be a match made in heaven, right? Let’s see…

Size: 4 3/4×52
Origin:
Honduras
Filler: Nicaraguan, Honduran, DR
Binder: Proprietary
Wrapper: Maduro

Appearance: First of all, I think the Casa Torano band is one of the most beautiful out there right now. It’s even more beautiful against the dark maduro wrapper. The wrapper itself is dark, very dark. Slightly mottled, this wrapper wasn’t the best looking specimen. It had some holes and a few slight tears in it. Still, overall, a very appealing cigar from the outside.

Taste: Mayday! Mayday! All my expectations are going down in flames! Unfortunately, all I can say about the taste is that it’s a bit of Windex mixed with Formula 409. You guessed it: nothing but ammonia. And I mean nothing but! I wish I could say it was only this sample, but alas it was the same with my previous tasting as well. I’m sorry everyone; I just couldn’t finish it. I tried, really I did.
Aroma: Before lighting, the wrapper smelled of cocoa and roasted nuts. Once lit, the smoke smelled, well…I’ll give you one guess…
Construction: So, here’s where the Torano name saves grace. For what I did smoke of the cigar, the burn was wonderful. Before lighting, the cigar had a slight give to it, but was consistent throughout in its feel. The draw was slightly looser than perfect, which I prefer with my larger ring guage cigars, and it never got hot in my mouth. The construction was first rate.Overall: Completely disappointed. Now, maybe my expectations were high, but let me tell you I’m more than fair even when that’s the case. What I do not expect is to have the offensive taste that these cigars have rolling around my tongue. The only reason this isn’t getting the lowest score possible is because of the construction. I understand that taste is subjective, but no one could like this… Please, someone comment that they’ve had a good experience on these and maybe I got a bad batch.Cigar Rating:1 1/2 out of 5 stars

  1. If you are getting that ammonia flavor trying letting them rest a longer. I had a couple they kinda reminded me a little bit of a Partagas Black. The verdict is still out on them in my book.

  2. Normally that’s what I would do, but with the strength of this ammonia, it’s almost as if the tobacco wasn’t cured long enough before being rolled. Plus, to let these rest long enough, we’re talking months based on how much ammonia was coming through. Shouldn’t have to wait months to smoke these.

    Verdict is definitely still out.

  3. Wow i have never had a problem with a Torano. maybe it needs to rest some. Try another it might have been a storage problem.

  4. GoinFerSmoke says:

I think I would try this cigar, but I would let it sit for 3 to 4 months before trying it.

  5. GoinFerSmoke, I agree. This one rested for a couple weeks, but it’s gonna take way longer for that to make any difference. My only problem is I don’t think you should have to let them rest that long before they’re smokable.

  6. I’ve got a friend who just picked up a box of these cheap from CBid.
Will have to see how he likes them, and if they’re any good from his box.

I wonder if dry boxing them for 48 hours would help with the ammonia smell while getting rid of the long wait time to smoke? Sometimes the Maduro’s can be a bit wet.

  7. Try the Toro size, I prefer it over the robusto. The Toro vitola is one of my favorite cigars and I’ve smoked alot of cigars. The toro is much smoother with a nice earthy flavor. Trust me, get a toro and you’ll change your mind. At least try a toro before you mislead anyone else into thinking this is a dogrocket…
