Cigar Review: Joya de Nicaragua Serie “C” Robusto

Another stick I’d picked up at the RTDA (I’ve still got a few more to work through) that just struck me as an I-should-smoke-this-tonight kinda stick. Plus, it’d been a little while since I’d smoked a Joya de Nicaragua of any kind.

Origin: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Binder: Nicaragua
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut
Size: 5×52

Appearance: This was a nice looking cigar. Surrounded by a double band that you could hardly tell was two bands, this cigar was well wrapped with that smooth, delicate Connecticut wrapper. No veins, no seam, and a slight sheen to the wrapper, it had two small tears in the leaf, but they presented no problems.

Taste: This cigar came out of the gate strong! Leather, wood and spice with the heat turned up. The spice rested in the back of my throat while the leather and wood danced on my tongue, hard. After about the first inch, it mellowed out, with the spice and woodiness moving to the background and an earthy tone moving up to join the leather. This was the mainstay of flavor combination throughout most of the smoke, with the strength hovering between medium and full. With about two inches left to go, the spice crept back up and became a major player again and stayed with the leather until the very end.

Aroma: Holding the cigar to my nose before lighting, a sweet birch scented tobacco aroma filled my nostrils. Careful to try and get a feel for the aroma of the smoke. The smoke is powerful and can bring tears to your eyes if you try to take in too much. It’s straight pepper, almost like pepper spray really. Wow! For those of you who, like myself, blow the smoke out of your nose every once in awhile, you need to be careful with this one.

Construction: This was a well made cigar. Consistently firm throughout the stick, no loose spots or a hint of a plug. After clipping, the draw was smooth. Not too loose, not too tight. The burn was crisp and even, never requiring a touch up. The ash held on for about two inches at a time, and probably would have lasted longer had I desired to risk wearing some of it. Also, at one point, I had to put the stick down for about 5 minutes due to a small family emergency and when I returned it was still burning strong.

Overall: This is a solid cigar. Nothing in particular blew me away with this cigar, but nothing turned me off on this cigar either. Traditional cigar flavors, good construction, definitely full-bodied strength and a decent presentation puts this just on the higher side of average.

Cigar Rating: 3 1/2 out of 5 stars

  1. I’ve heard lots of people raving about this cigar online, but so far I haven’t been able to locate it near me, The idea of a Connecticut Shade wrapper on a JdN intrigues me. Great review.
