La Aurora 100 Anos Robusto

This was a cigar I’d been putting off. I’m not one for hype and when this cigar came out it was completely hyped and touted as the next big thing. The price tag reflects that at around $12.00 for a robusto single. But, it was time for me to see what these 100 Anos were all about. A Dominican puro, it is made from a supposedly rare corojo leaf. Each one is numbered; it’s part of their Limited Edition marketing of this cigar that commemorates 100 years of cigar making for La Aurora.
Appearance: Okay, so this is a great looking cigar. The band is exquisitely ornate, but not overbearing. And the wrapper was just covered in an oily sheen. I love oily looking cigars. It looked well made. The wrapper overlapping was not indiscreetly visible and there was a slight tooth to the cigar. This definitely looks like an upper class cigar.
Taste: This is described by many as a full-bodied cigar. I disagree. It starts out with a medium to full kick of cedar and birch woods, but then settles into a mild to medium overall strength. There is a distinct woodiness to this cigar. The corojo gives it a distinct flavoring that you won’t find in many other cigars, but overall there was wood and leather throughout the smoke. Throw in a little light cocoa and that’s what you get with this smoke. It was not complex by any means, but it wasn’t boring. The flavor and strength were consistent throughout the smoke once it settled from its initial lighting.
Aroma: Holding the stick to my nose prelight gave me a distinct leather and cocoa smell. Very pleasant and aromatic. The smoke was light and unoffensive. The non-cigar smoking ladies that hound you about stinky cigars might not complain about this one.
Construction: The stick was firm to the touch and consistent overall. It had a medium draw that wasn’t as smooth as I would have thought it should be. The burn was quite ragged though, no matter what touch-up I did. The ash was loose and always threatened to become a part of my wardrobe if not watched carefully. This is a stick that I’ve had for a few months properly stored, so the burn issues concerned me a bit.
Overall: This is a good cigar. It’s not great if you want my honest opinion. At $12.00 a stick it won’t be one that I frequent for sure. Good flavoring and aroma would put this at about a 3 1/2 rating normally, but the construction issues and price point made me take off half a star. I will say that with such a beautiful cigar in your hand, people will think you know how to pick ‘em.
