Guest Review: La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Chisel
Alright, this week’s guest review comes from Kyle who smokes up a La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Chisel. Thanks for submitting this, Kyle!

My brother-in-law got me interested in La Flor’s Ligero line a couple of years ago with the 300 and 400 series, and I’ve got to say that I haven’t smoked a bad one yet. I figured it would be more of the same going into the Double Ligero line. I wasn’t quite prepared for what I had in store…
The pre-light once over and draw left me with the taste of dark chocolate, leather and spice. I was thinking that it could get complex, but wasn’t sure, since the regular Ligeros aren’t too complex; just good cigars. The light was actually kind of difficult on this cigar, and after that, the draw was fairly tight with a minimum amount to smoke. I wasn’t too keen on this cigar just yet and, to top it off, the burn began getting uneven just a few minutes into the cigar.
Right off the bat, I got hit with a strong mixture of spice and leather. I was not ready and it really sent me reeling for a couple of minutes. As I settled in more, I could only taste the pepper getting stronger, but with faint floral notes in the background. Moving on into the first 1/3, it calmed down some and the burn became a bit more even. The draw, however, was still pretty tight.
As I smoked on into the 2/3, the spice moved to the background and there became a much more noted flavor of toast, leather, and even a hint of vanilla. This cigar was beginning to feel like a Rubik’s Cube in the way that I was trying to figure out all of the flavors and how they fit together. The smoke had improved a little bit by this point, so I was enjoying the cigar a little bit more. It was at the end of the 2/3 that I suddenly got the taste of rubber to go along with the other flavors. It only lasted for about five minutes but was still sharp enough to make me consider putting the cigar down for the night. Perseverance paid off, though, especially when the spiciness suddenly came back to the forefront and danced on my lips.
The Chisel ended about the same way that it began… spiciness and leather. The burn never evened up and the smoke was average at best. The thing about this cigar, though, is how incredibly complex the flavors were. If you like strong, complex cigars, then I would highly recommend the Double Ligero Chisel. If you enjoy a straight-forward, smooth-smoker, then you might want to look elsewhere.

Great review Kyle! I’ve never been able to get into the DLs — for one, they’re a little too powerful for me to enjoy most of the time, but there’s also a flavor in there that really turns me off. I could never identify it exactly, but I think you nailed it: rubber. There’s a lot to admire about this smoke, but that one note kinda ruins it for me. Nice job.
Nice review. I have only smoked a couple of the DLs. They are quite strong. I’ve actually read on a forum that this cigar is similar to an OpusX.
