Cigar Review: Troya Clasico XVII Robusto

Tonight I decided I wanted to go with something a little full-bodied so I selected this beautiful specimen of a cigar out of my humidor. The Troya line is blended and rolled by none other than Don Pepin, so we’ll see how this Nicaraguan puro stacks up with his reputation of excellent quality and flavor.

Size: 5×54
Origin: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaraguan
Binder: Nicaraguan
Wrapper:Corojo Oscuro

Appearance: This is a beautiful cigar. Bold yet simple, the band exudes a toughness while the dark oscuro wrapper is well rolled with slight seams and no veins. The triple cap is done perfectly. So dark, this cigar just looks full-bodied. Now, I know you shouldn’t judge the strength of a cigar by its color, but this one just looks tough.

Taste: Pre-light draw hinted at coffee and spice. After lighting, this cigar is in your face from the beginning. A strong mixture of cedar, leather, and coffee rotate throughout this cigar, one flavor giving way to the other as you smoke it through, but always these three. Extremely flavorful without being too overpowering, this is a nice blend of strength and taste. It was never harsh or unbecoming.

Aroma: Holding the wrapper to my nose I was able to detect the leather and coffee that I tasted after lighting. The smoke was quite a bit much on the nose, so take care if you’re trying to see what it smells like. I got a nose full of spicy pepper.

Construction: Feeling this cigar, it was solid but not too dense. The burn started to favor one side after about an inch of ash. At first, maybe I thought I’d lit it poorly, but after ashing, I saw that there was a tunnel boring through one side of this sample. The others I’ve had were perfect. The draw was smooth and firm, not too loose. And the amount of smoke was a dream for the smoke ring blower in me.

Overall: This is a very, very good cigar. I wouldn’t say great because of its price point. At $9 a stick, it’s a bit rich; however, if you’ve got that kind of money and you want a really tasty full-bodied cigar, I definitely recommend this one. However, I caution you, this cigar will sneak up on you and kick your ass if you’re not gentle with it. I’m a full-bodied smoker and I had to sip this cigar.
